I don't disagree with you - Ramble On Rose is one of my favorite Jerry songs, and I agree with what you say about the extra weight those lines carry - but for me Jerry's musical manifesto is in the Allen Toussaint song that he covered so well:

I'll take a melody,
and see what I can do about it.
I'll take a simple C to G -
and feel brand-new about it.
I understand why the old fishermen sail along:
some day you'll be gone.

(not sure I got those last two lines exactly right, but you know the song)
